Bishops’ Blunder
The U.S. bishops’ conference removed a controversial essay on “diversity, equity, and inclusion” from its website, saying it was posted mistakenly and does not represent an official position (The Pillar, Sept. 13). The essay, titled “DEI Means God,” was written by Auxiliary Bishop Roy Campbell of Washington, D.C., a member of the bishops’ Committee on Cultural Diversity in the Church. He criticizes Donald Trump for wanting to “erase Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from the American conscience” and “separate us from one another, not just migrants, but many, especially people of color, who have been denied for far too long, equal opportunities in education, social recognition, and economic growth, truly denying the DIGNITY OF EVERY HUMAN BEING!” The acronym DEI forms the Latin word dei, meaning God, Campbell writes, and in that sense, “God is Diversity,” “God is Equity,” and “God is Inclusion.” Spokeswoman Chieko Noguchi said Campbell’s essay “is a draft of a personal reflection” that has not been “discussed and given to a definitive publication plan.” The bishops’ conference has issued no official statements on DEI policies or initiatives.
Biden’s Bias
The Biden administration displayed a “consistent and systematic pattern of discrimination” against Christians, according to a Department of Justice report, as the former president’s officials “weaponized the full weight of the federal government” against them (New York Post, Sept. 5). The Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias describes instances in which the DOJ targeted Catholics as possible “domestic terrorism threats,” multiple agencies refused religious exemptions to COVID-19 vaccine mandates, and the DOJ arrested two dozen pro-lifers via the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, “yet refused to apply the FACE Act to protect places of worship and crisis pregnancy centers.” Instead, Biden’s DOJ “pursued novel theories of prosecution against those speaking or demonstrating based upon their Christian faith.” Additionally, the State Department favored hiring non-Christians while discriminating against Christian employees, who “were less likely to be permitted leave for observation of certain Christian holidays as opposed to non-Christian ones.” The “unlawful and improper conduct, policies, or practices that target Christians” have been “identified, terminated, and rectified,” the report reads. “The days of anti-Christian bias in the federal government are over.”
Where the Streets Have Jihadists’ Names
The Muslim mayor of Dearborn, Michigan, told a Christian resident he is “not welcome” in the city. Abdullah Hammoud made the declaration at a city council meeting after Edward Barham objected to street signs honoring Osama Siblani, publisher of The Arab American News, whom he quoted as saying, “The blood of the martyrs irrigates the land of Palestine whether we are in Michigan and whether we are in Yemen,” and “Everyone should fight within his means. They will fight with stones, others will fight with guns, others fight with planes, drones, and rockets.” Barham likened the signage to naming a “Hezbollah Street or Hamas Street.” Hammoud suggested that Barham, whom he called a “bigot,” “racist,” and “Islamophobe,” should avoid the intersections in question or “close your eyes” while passing through. Hammoud told Barham, “Although you live here, I want you to know as mayor, you are not welcome here,” saying he would “launch a parade” if Barham were to leave. Dearborn has America’s highest proportion of Muslim residents (GB News, Sept. 17).
