What Happened to Bill Donohue?
In a February 18, 2005, fax, Bill Donohue, the President of the Catholic League, said that “the homosexual crisis in the Catholic Church is largely behind us.” Karl Keating in his E-Letter (March 15, 2005) took exception to that, saying that a priest told him that in “a diocese…at least half of the priests” are homosexuals.
In May 2002 it was revealed that Archbishop Rembert Weakland had a homosexual affair with Paul Marcoux. The June 2-8, 2002, National Catholic Register (controlled by the Legionaries of Christ) printed a statement from Donohue on the Weakland sex scandal: “It needs to be asked what social good is served when current disclosures of past indiscretions [just indiscretions? — Ed.] are made public…. This kind of sexual McCarthyism serves no constructive purpose.” Really now?
When it was revealed that Deal Hudson committed adultery with a female student of his, Donohue fired off a press release saying that the girl was a “drunk,” implying that she had it coming. If you didn’t know, neocon Donohue and neocon Hudson are big pals. On his Board of Advisors for the Catholic League are a bevy of neocons: Linda Chavez, Robert George, Mary Ann Glendon, Thomas Monaghan, Michael Novak, Robert Royal, George Weigel, and others.
Donohue also defended Fr. Maciel, the founder of the Legionaries of Christ, against charges of pederasty, calling them “balderdash.” How wrong he was!
