The Failed Experiment in Eternal Adolescence
COVENANT & CIVILIZATION
The modern West has refined the craft of infantilization with near-scientific precision. Each generation since the Second World War has grown up under a moral bar slightly lower than the one before it. Expanding and improving comfort has become the great social experiment, and maturity has turned into a cultural inconvenience. A society that prizes pleasure above responsibility will always choose ease over growth. The hidden political objective of comfort is compliance. Keep people child-like, and they will rarely rebel.
The popular defense for this soft tyranny rests on neuroscience. We are told that the human brain does not reach full development until a person is in his mid-20s. This fact, once a reason to accelerate moral formation, now functions as an excuse to delay it. It has become the favorite argument of a civilization committed to adolescence. College students are treated like middle-schoolers, and middle-aged adults still talk about “finding themselves.” Plato once wrote that “the object of education is to teach us to love what is beautiful.” The modern equivalent might be: “The object of education is to teach us to avoid what is unpleasant.”
Our ancestors had greater expectations. A 15-year-old in the 19th century carried more responsibilities than many of today’s 30-year-olds. He could manage a farm, apprentice in a trade, or provide for siblings. He rose early, worked hard, and confronted the visible results of his efforts. Aristotle wrote that upbringing is the process of “habituating the young to virtue.” Virtue requires discipline, repetition, and correction. Our age has replaced this principle with therapy. We prefer affirmation to formation. Instead of asking whether the young are virtuous, we ask whether they feel validated.
