Clandestine ‘Communion’
In our New Oxford Note “Integrity or a Lie?” (Oct.), we wrote, “‘Vicky’ Gene Robinson, the Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire, said the Anglican Church of England would be close to shutting down if it weren’t for ‘gay’ and lesbian clergy. No doubt, this is true. Robinson said that many clergy live with ‘gay’ and lesbian partners, with the full knowledge of their Church of England bishops, but their bishops warn them against making their relationships public.”
According to The Times of London (Sept. 18), “the [Anglican] Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, is to hold a secret Communion service for gay clergy and their partners in London” (italics added), at St. Peter’s, Eaton Square, the Anglican parish that is known as “the spiritual home to some of the country’s most liberal and wealthy Anglican elite.” This event was to take place on November 29, “under the Chatham House rules, which prevent any disclosure of the discussions.” The list of attendees “will be shredded afterwards.” What does the Archbishop have to hide?
The Archbishop of Canterbury had just “returned from three months on holiday and sabbatical,” at a time when “the [Anglican] Church is in disarray.” He had been “working on a study of the Russian writer Dostoevsky.”
