‘Nothing Short of Miracles’
The School of Law at the Jesuit-run Santa Clara University held its fourth annual Celebration of Diversity Gala on October 25, 2007. They honored alumna Elizabeth Birch, a lesbian and President and Executive Director of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) from 1994 to 2004 (for more on which, see the preceding New Oxford Note).
According to California Catholic Daily (Oct. 28, 2007), the law school lauded HRC as “the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization” in a news release. During Birch’s time with HRC, “its membership grew from 100,000 to 1.1 million supporters, and its budget rose from $6.5 million to almost $30 million….” Cal Catholic quotes a Diversity Education Center biography of Birch: “George Magazine dubbed Birch and her partner, Hilary Rosen…one of Washington’s ten most powerful couples.” She and Hilary adopted twins in 1999.
Birch spoke on behalf of HRC “against the 1996 federal ‘Defense of Marriage Act.’ In her testimony she said homosexuals…’are continuously accused of lacking stability and the deepest kind of commitment in our relationships — let me assure you, our relationships are nothing short of miracles….'”
In 2007, according to Cal Catholic, The Advocate, a homosexual magazine, “announced the separation of Birch and Rosen.”
Miracles? Her relationship fell quite short.
