And This Just in: New Oxford Review Recommends Burning Envoy Magazine (Specifically 5.6)

The latest Envoy carries this astounding news: “The September 2002 New Oxford Review (NOR) recently recommended the burning of Envoy magazine (specifically 5.6).” So claims the Editor of Envoy, Carl E. Olson, in its 6.4 issue (Envoy doesn’t carry dates anymore).

Actually, our September 2002 issue (pp. 23-25) discussed Dr. Scott Hahn’s “findings” in favor of a feminine or female Holy Spirit as presented in the 5.6 Envoy, and we quoted Dr. Hahn: “if the Magisterium should find any of them [my findings] unsatisfactory, I will be the first to renounce them and gratefully consign them to the flames — and then invite you to do the same.” We responded that the Magisterium had already determined his “findings” to be unsatisfactory, and we cited Liturgiam Authenticam, the Catechism, and the Norms for the Translation of Biblical Texts for Use in the Liturgy, as well as the words of Jesus Himself. Then we said: “So, dear reader, if you have the 5.6 Envoy on hand, Dr. Hahn is inviting you to tear out his article and burn it.”

As anyone can see, we were only taking Dr. Hahn at his word.

Moreover, neither Dr. Hahn nor the NOR was recommending that the entire issue of Envoy be burned. The article in Envoy we were referring to was a self-contained, four-page centerfold written by Dr. Hahn; they appear in every issue and can easily be torn out without damaging any of the rest of the magazine.
