Biden administration takes first step toward ending U.S. involvement in Saudi Arabia's war
Daniel Larison, over at The American Conservative, writes on one significant change to U.S. foreign policy in the first few weeks of the new president’s term. First, a few highlights:
– Years of determined activism by a left-right alliance of the war’s opponents have made Yemen a priority for the new administration.
– Larison points out that Biden’s early actions on Yemen mark a break with both Obama and Trump on U.S. dealings with the Saudis and the United Arab Emirates, and this suggests the administration “may be responsive to grassroots pressure to end U.S. involvement in other foreign wars as well.”
– Overturning the Houthi designation as a foreign terrorist organization, and ending the sanctions that go with it, has averted a wide-spread famine.
– The Saudis and the UAE “are no closer to achieving their goals” today than when they started the war.
