A ‘News’ Outlet that Holds You in Low Regard
Fox News Digital, running almost daily pics of women in bikinis, looks ever more like a tabloid
On this Feast of the Assumption, we need to continue to deliver news to the world about how we should treat women — both as subjects of articles and as readers. Fox News Digital (foxnews.com), most unfortunately, has been running almost daily columns with pictures of women in bikinis and other scanty outfits. This would be expected for a tabloid, or for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, but not for what has been regarded as a serious news outlet. Some women are the subject of more than one column in short spans of time. Typical headlines include words like “sizzling,” “flaunt,” “daring,” “stunning.” I guess we could be happy that it doesn’t run similar articles on men.

With what low regard does Fox News Digital treat its audience, both men and women, when it serves up clickbait with salacious headlines appealing to prurient interests?
We Catholics honor Mary but we cannot honor her more than God, the Creator of the Universe, has Himself honored her by her conception without original sin, by her motherhood of our Savior, by her assumption, body and soul, into heaven. She is, as the Preface to the Mass for the Assumption declares, a “sign of hope and comfort” for God’s pilgrim people.
She could say to each of us, as did the archangel Gabriel to Zechariah, “I am Mary! I stand in God’s presence.” (cf. Luke 1:19)
This is an excellent day to present Mary to the world, including the editors of Fox News Digital, as a model woman, as a model human being.
