Can You Imagine?

February 2006

On the southeast tip of India, in the state of Tamil Nadu, in the capital city of Chennai, there are plans to install 500 condom vending machines, and 1,000 more across the state later. This is to prevent HIV/AIDS. India has the second highest HIV/AIDS rate in the world, second only to South Africa.

According to The Australian (Dec. 13, 2005), this angered Muslim groups who said the condom vending machines would “degrade women and corrupt the young.” According to the story, “Over 200 Muslim women, many in veils, hit the streets of Chennai waving placards denouncing the plan and shouting: ‘Don’t ruin our culture.’”

Of course, American culture has already been ruined. Can you imagine American Catholics doing any such thing nowadays?

M.H. Jawahirullah, who heads the Muslim Progressive Party, says, “We must fight AIDS, but these machines at public places will only promote sex outside marriage among the younger generation.”

The Australian also reports: “A popular south Indian actress was pelted with sandals, tomatoes and rotten eggs in Tamil Nadu for saying recently it was okay for women to have sex before marriage, as long as it was safe sex, and that men should not expect their brides to be virgins.” Imagine pelting an American actress with shoes, tomatoes, and rotten eggs for saying such things! You can’t, for what that south Indian actress wants is standard operating procedure in American culture.

"Western" women will not demonstrate against condoms being dispensed to the general public.
It's the prophylactic myth that they should counter.
Whatever disease a person is trying not to catch will eventually defeat a condom by no fault accident or inconsiderate carelessness.
